Might be worth a sniff…
The ‘nellie’ was originally three residential buildings which can still be seen in the skeleton form of timberwork inside. To the right of the central fireplace (as you enter the building from the corner entrance) there are two lines of such timberwork which would have created a cavity of some sort between number 51 and 52 (the street numbers go up one side and down the next). In this space there is now a small pedestal table and two strange bar stools (strange because they came from that Pride of the Valley sculpture park place near Tilford… so they look like they were whittled by beaver-toothed-tree-munchkin-midget-wizards).
Anyway…. this space feels, well, lets just say it feels a bit ‘dark’. I have spoken to a few people, two of whom I trust implicitly - and they’ve seen a black-clothed ‘cavalier figure’ appear at 4am in this spot. Now I’ve always been a bit sceptical of; 1) people seeing things in pubs, and 2) things that appear at a precise time of day or night…. but I believe these people and I’ve sensed something there myself. So… I can get out of hours access if anyone feels that it’s worth staying up for… let me know.
Also, Farnham is full of so many ghost stories that it’s boring… but if anyone has heard anything about the tunnel that’s meant to run from the castle to The Borough and said to be, yes, haunted, there is also some evidence of this in the cellar of the same pub.
…and while I’m on the subject of Castle Street, my office has a Roman soldier in the basement and a very grumpy servant on the third floor (not physically of course!)… so you may be interested in visiting them at the same time… I told you it was boring…
Adieu
