Paul told me a similar story, I think it was Paul, where the actor who played Kojak had broken down and a man pulled over and offered to drive him to the garage to get petrol/help. He accepted got in his car and got dropped off at the garage. He had made a note of the cars registration with a view to thank him later on.
When he approached the address the lady who answered the door recognised the car and the description as being that of her husband who had died a number of years previoiusly.
So it sounds a very similar story.
