Several people have been completely astonished to see the ghost of an old gypsy woman, leading an old brown horse down a narrow road that leads through the woods towards Bramley. The phantom woman and her horse always vanish near Cranleigh Waters.
In 1971, an airline pilot was driving home from Shalford with his daughter, when he saw the couple ahead and slowed down to avoid hitting them. When the man remarked to his daughter that he was surprised to see them, his daughter said that she could only see an old horse. He then realised that only he could see the woman. Both apparitions disappeared as they approached the road junction near Cranleigh Waters.
There is no record of a mysterious death at that junction. The area was once a popular camping spot for Romanies, who used to camp in the woods.
