In Alma Lane, near the Alma Inn, the sounds of heavy-booted steps are often heard. This is the ghost of an army runner of the Napoleonic Period, who was waylaid by footpads and murdered, whilst on his way to Aldershot, carrying the good news of the British victory at Waterloo in 1815.
Phantom troopers of Cromwell’s Ironsides, on horseback, have also been seen approaching All Saints Church. A solitary Parliamentary soldier, on foot, has also been seen from time to time, appearing from a drive opposite the church, crossing the road and then vanishing. It is believed that he was killed in 1643 whilst attacking the church, which was heavily defended by Royalist forces.
By far the strangest manifestation in the village is a phantom flock of sheep, which can not only be seen but also heard. This flock is said on one occasion to have actually parted ranks for a motorist who was driving along the road.
