Another spooky castle........
900 year old Amberley Castle is now a privately owned country hotel, albeit with dungeons and a portcullis which is lowered at midnight. All of the rooms are named after Sussex towns and villages - Herstmonceux is reputedly the most haunted of all the rooms. Apparently, the castle is home to the resident ghost of Emily, a village girl who was seduced and then rejected by her lover during the Middle Ages. She is supposed to have flung herself from the battlements to escape her despair. Nowadays she is supposed to play games with the housekeeping staff by throwing cushions to the floor after the room has been serviced.
The Herstmonceux suite is the only room with access to the battlements. To reach them you have to go up a winding stone staircase and through an abandoned room which is directly above the portcullis. It is in this abandoned room where there is a sense of foreboding and despair, and certainly not somewhere you would want to spend time alone in the dark...
