When I first went to Berry Pomeroy Castle with a friend in 1998 after seeing a documentary about the place on Sky we experienced definite warm and cold spots as we walked through the ruins of the mansion walls and found the stair well that led down under the castle.
We both went down the spiral stairs and were faced with a wall as black as soot. You know when you look into darkness and its so dark you cant make out if your stairing at an open room or a brick wall. I didnt even want to reach forward and see if I could touch it. We were down there very briefly as we both felt very uneasy and unwelcome with hairs standing up on the back of our necks we ran back up the steps.
We later found out that this was where Margaret Pomeroy was left to starve to death by her sister and has been seen numerous times walking the castle walls down into this room. The other interesting observation is since I have been on the net I have seen a number of pictures of this room and the stairs (see link on website to a good site with pics) and the room is well lit with a window with bars on it. So it wasnt even as if there was no window or the window had shutters drawn accross it. We were there in broad daylight at the beginning of the year so why was it pitch black and foreboding down there?
Also later on as we looked down over the cliff that falls from one side of the castle we both heard a very loud moan which in all honesty sound a little like a cow to me but there was nothing about. We were also on our own and there were no other vistors at the castle, that we knew of anyway.
The funny part is we both thought the other one had made the noise and we both chimed in unison "awww very spooky" or words similar to that.
So we are going back again armed with the fearless b1gb1rd, equipment and a lot more knowledge this time of the area.
