I've spent some time at King John's Castle. The sweet-spot for me is on the second floor - plenty of people up there! Also, a few hundred years ago there was a horse racecourse next door (J5 M3 is almost the middle of it, and why the Lord Derby pub is so named), so there's a lot of crossover between horse stuff (blacksmiths, saddlers, spectators, killed-in-action jockeys and so on) and castle stuff to pick-up in the castle area. On the down-side there's a farm on the other side of the canal that doubles-up as an unofficial MOD testing facility - they test "harmless stuff" over there at all times of the day and night. There's also a local nutter named Roger who dresses as a Minstrel and hides in the woods, so worth a rugby-tackle if you see one - just to be sure.
The Jolly Farmer pub nearby - I was forced to endure a skittles evening in there a few years ago (the only time I've ever been there, I'm not suggesting that it's a hive of paranormal activity), as I went to throw my ball (or whatever it's called), I looked at the skittles and saw a woman hanging by a rope about her neck at the end of the room. Very unexpected, as nothing about the room suggested investigation. Needless to say, I fumbled my shot...

Thats really interesting as when we last went in October I connected with a man working with leather. I assumed he must have had something to do with making chairs at the time but its in the report on the main site on the 28th October 2004. I had no idea about the race course. Thanks for that and welcome to the forum Talking of the 2nd floor as well when we went one night about 1:30 or something in the morning there was somebody stomping around on the floor above and as you know there is no floor above so Im inclined to agree that is a very active part of the castle. Would be amasing if they ever restored it and put a floor back in.

Thats interesting about the local nutter dressed as a minstrel, is he pretending to be the ghost of the minstrel that is supposed to haunt there or is it him that has caused the legend of a ghost minstrel?
Simon.

I've always assumed that he was dressing up as the ghost and not responsible for the legend itself. I have seen him in his ghostly attire, and he looks more like the jester from Rentaghost than a Minstrel, so if he did start it, then I can only assume that the legend would have been different.
