Hi Rob,
Your best bet is to go for one of the Sony range which seems to have the best night vision mode available. Its certainly what most of us have got I beleive.
They seem to come in all shapes and sizes but we havent had very good results with the MV format which I think is the smaller tapes. Other than that you should be able to get a digital 8 or Hi 8 for a reasonable price if you shop around on the net.
I think Robin picked one up from Argos recently at a good price. Does anybody know of a good cheap place to pick up a camera?

As an owner of a Sony MicroMV format camcorder I agree with Spooky. The Digital-8 or Hi-8 camcoders appear to better in the hand and also more compatible with editing software. My MicroMV camcorder is just too small to use controls such as zoom smoothly and without having to look where your fingers are on the camcorder body. The slightly larger Digital-8 or Hi-8 formats are much easier to control and use all the functions whilst still keeping you eye on the action as it all "kicks off". Take a look at our gadgets page on our main website. Also I see that my local Sony Centre is having a summer sale so you might find a bargain. Check that you can't get it cheaper via the internet.

A good place to compare prices on the internet is www.dealtime.co.uk although there are plenty others on the net that do a similar job in comparing prices. Might be of help anyway

Be aware that the new Sony range of Digital8 camcorders has the Camera/Player switch close to the record button and is far too easy to switch off just as you are about to record something (such as the TRV-255E). The older Hi8 cameras though of a lesser quality don't 'munch through' the tapes so quickly and have a 'clunky' switch which is easier to use (such as my TRV-208E). The same 60 minute tape in my camcorder and a D8 camcorder on long play lasts 1 Hour in D8 and 2 Hours in mine (a 90 lasts 1½ Hours in D8 and 3 Hours in mine!!!) Conclusion
D8 is better quality (Near Broadcast Quality) but 'eats through tapes. If you are converting to DVD later then this is the camera for you (but keep your wallet handy).
Hi8 is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run but of a lesser quality. Great for video and OK(ish) for DVD also leaves you more money for gadgets.

mini dv is best, sony!
No fuss on the night shots, really smooth! better than Digital 8 and Hi 8, No tape degredation as it's full on digital!
And did I mention it's what outside Broadcasts like news use to record onto!
And is what most haunted use to record onto! if u must!
