I found this dawghouse.topcities.com/tips.html and thought it worthy of posting here. Don't hunt ghosts when you are tired, ill, angry, depressed, hungry, or otherwise drained, because you may become a target for unpleasantness. Nothing from the spirit world can harm us unless we first give permission. Compromised states, such as fatigue and illness, open the door. Pray according to your own spiritual tradition. Ask the God (or Goddess) of your understanding to protect and guide you in your work. Trust your own good sense of the surroundings and act accordingly. Take a cell phone with you and don't go alone. Let others know where you will be and when you plan to return. Be sure your car is in good condition and the gas tank is full. Ghost hunting is usually done at night, often in deserted places. I am more concerned with the malicious intent of human beings than I am with how a ghost might react to me. If an area doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and get out--not all threats are otherworldly.
